With snow dusting the rooftops and the city streets glittering with festive illuminations, Berlin is at it’s most magical and there’s no better way to embrace the cold than hitting the ice. Open-air ice rinks pop up all around the capital during the winter months, so pull on some warm clothes, lace up your skates and join the locals on the ice.

The number 1 destination for ice skating in Berlin has to be Potsdamer Platz, which hosts a 40m long ice rink from November to January, as well as a 70m long snow-covered sledging slope, where you can sled, tube or even ski. The Potsdamer Platz Winter World also includes one of Berlin’s top Christmas markets, figure skating performances and a varied roster of street entertainment to get you in the festive mood.

Other options for skating include the Erika Hess Ice rink in the Wedding district, close to the Museum of Natural History, where there’s a huge outdoor rink, as well as an indoor rink if the weather is bad. The Horst-Dohm Ice Stadium in Charlottenburg has a 400-meter speed skating track and a figure skating track where you can show off your moves; the Neukölln Ice Skating Stadium has 2 open-air rinks and is a popular spot for families; and the Lankwitz offers skating lessons, ice hockey tournaments and ice discos under the stars. Feeling adventurous? If it’s cold enough, it’s even possible to skate on the city’s frozen lakes – Tegeler See, Rummelsberger See or Krumme Lanke are all popular choices.
